If you have read any of Jonathan Stroud’s other works such as the books in the Bartimaeus Sequence you know you are onto a winner. If you are new to his work then you’ll find in this offering that there is Ghost hunting, Ghosts that kill, murder and mayhem. From the get go the book is great reader, and once again the Mr Stroud’s abilities to generate some quirky but always well rounded and interesting characters is amazing. Really what is there not like about this book? In short this very good story telling and please do not pigeon hole yourself over which age group may read it, whether you in your teens or your sixties this book covers all.

Lockwood Co The Screaming Staircase Jonathan Stroud Health Personal Care Reviews

I've had The Whispering Skull on my TRB for a long time, but it wasn't until I actually got a hold of it that I realized it was the second in the series. Go figure. So I grabbed this book so that I would know what's going on and I was not especially impressed. I liked that Lockwood had a Sherlock Holmes personality, but Lucy and George were just not that interesting to me. The world that has been taken over by ghosts but the writing didn't make me care that much. I don't know if I will be reading The Whispering Skull any time soon.
Lockwood and Co is a rare animal a thoroughly enjoyable middle grade story that has the depth and interest to appeal to all ages, especially adults. Characters are nuanced, the plot intriguing, mysteries build upon mysteries, and there is an overall story arc that will take several books to slowly uncover. I was never interested in supernatural/ghost stories but this really does rise above the genre.

Story For 50 years, ghosts have been a problem for England. Only the young can see/sense/fight them but the spectral visitors are returning in numbers - creating "The Problem" for modern England. Young Lucy is especially talented but an unfortunate incident has left her with no means of employment. She comes to Lockwood & Co hoping for a job fighting ghosts - but will get much more than she bargained for at the small agency.

I really appreciated that there was layer upon layer of intricacies within the plot. The whole supernatural situation is well constructed and the worldbuilding supreme. Imagine a Dickensian type of London but in a modern setting and you have a good idea of the setting. But in addition to the book-specific mystery that they solve (the Screaming Staircase), there are hints that each of the other characters have their own mysteries and skeletons in the closet. That means we have more than a 'monster of the week' plot and even more reason to anxiously await the next book. The hints are tantalizing and the books end with a very big reveal.

I've read the first two books in the series and they are both excellent - the foundation of the first book sets up more intrigue in the second. Characters are built upon from book to book and even side characters (rival agencies, government officials, etc.) are given depth and grow.

This was one of my favorite reads of the year. Note I listened to the audible version and the narration was excellent. Reviewed from an ARC
Amazing, fun, clever, with a dash of scary this book has just about everything the middle grade reader could ask for in a book devoted to a certain type of ghostbusters located in an alt-world England over-run by ghosts. What is that certain type of ghostbuster? A child, or more precisely, a middle grader with good wits, is definitely the ideal rescuer for the people besieged by spirits who won’t go gentle into that good night. For Lockwood & Co., no adults are even required as supervisors (!) which does cause several odd glances and possible poor outcomes. But it will surely delight readers in this first in a series. I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley and I loved every minute of the story.
I wasn't a fan of the Bartimeaus Trilogy, but I got sucked right into this series. This isn't my usual genre either. All these ghoulies and ghosties and horror stories are not my favorites, but this one was really well done, and not in the spooky kind of way.

The characters are great. These kids are entrepreneurs up against bigger agencies, and trying to convince adults that they are fully capable of running a successful business without adult supervision. I liked their personalities, especially Lucy, our brave MC. This is another great book that puts a woman (girl) in a strong position, and - no romance!!

I recommend this for fantasy & mystery fans. This is kind of like those young Sherlock Holmes type books out there.

I'm loving this. I can't believe I've passed over this before, based on the author's other books.

Disclaimer I received a free copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Stroud is a gifted story teller. Good characters, brilliant plot. I liked it a lot, and will enjoy the next book in this series.
An imaginative and thrilling original. Reading as an 18 year old, it kept me on the edge of my seat and left me wanting more. Stunning imagery, lovely character development, and just the right touch of the fantastical. Highly recommended.
