Thirteen-year old McKay is a talented baseball player, but as equally untalented when it comes to algebra. If he doesn't bring his grade up, his parents threaten to make him quit the team.
His best friend Tony thinks the natural solution is for McKay to befriend Serena, a pretty girl in class, who also happens to get straight A's in algebra. Not only will that get McKay the tutor he desperately needs, but it will give Tony the chance to flirt with Serena's two best friends. Unfortunately, if McKay follows Tony's advice on how to "play the game," he might find himself in an even worse spot than when he was merely failing algebra. With a keen sense of wit, and more self-confidence than he gives himself credit for, McKay will keep readers alternately laughing and groaning as he is dragged kicking and screaming into the subtle (and often not so subtle) world of teen dating.

As a middle-aged woman, I am not the target market for this tween book. But I bought it as a result of hearing the author speak at an event, and because it is set in my own town. It turned out to be a delightfully engaging read, told from the viewpoint of a baseball-loving 13-year-old boy. It captures with warmth and humor the tension of entering the unfamiliar waters of the boy-girl relationship world. It's clean and funny and imparts several good messages without being preachy.Product details

Playing The Field edition by Janette Rallison Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I think that Playing The Field is a good book. It wasn't the best, but I enjoyed it while It lasted. There's a lot of drama, kinda like a small soap opera. But it's fun. Like it!
Amazing author and amazing story. I love how u can actually picture this go down in your head. You are a officially one of my favorite authors
It reminded me a lot of myself when I was younger and just starting to notice boys. McKay's witty sense of humor was great, and it all felt very true to life.
This is one of Janette Rallison's earlier books. Very humorous (as all her books are) and super cute! It is appropriate for middle grade ages and up (I'm in my 30's and enjoyed reading it myself). I highly recommend this and all her books!
This book is so sweet, cool, and interesting. Playing the field is the best page turner I have ever read, and I have read alot of them. If u r a tween or teen you can totally relate to this book. The best part about this book probably was being able to see the opinion on girls through the main character's (Mckay) point of veiw. Playing the field includes heart breaks, the typical drama (that I laughed at), the best sport in the world (baseball) and friendship. I totally recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a sweet, sportsy, awsome, amazing page turner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely adorable story. My daughter is going into 8 th grade and she thought it was hilarious, helpful and relevant.
I gave it 5 stars because this book has great detail, and highlights junior high relations right on point. It has amazing humor, and is relatable. This book is probably best for teens and preteens.
