The Good: Terrible thoroughly proves why he should be everyone's favorite romantic partner. His love for Chess seems to know no bounds. The action and mystery in this book are awesome. Stacia Kane writes the way I think and I love that. Certain quotes speak to me in a way that makes me want to embroider them on a pillow, or at least paint them on a mug or something since I'm not the decorative pillow type.

The Bad: I've said it before in reviews of this series, but it needs to be repeated. Readers DO NOT need to know every single detail of everyday actions. We don't read about every time someone in a book urinates and we definitely don't need to read about every single time Chess takes drugs. Mentioning it 20 or more times in the course of a single day is overkill. We get it, she's an addict. It's a basic body function to her at this point. Telling us every time she procures drugs, every time she takes drugs and every time she thinks about taking drugs is THE most boring thing imaginable. It's not reinforcing the idea that she's an addict. 4 books in, we know the extent her addiction effects her life. Now it's just filler and annoying. It makes it extremely hard to get into the book and often pulls me right out of the action. Seriously, enough is enough. If it isn't effecting the plot in some way, it should be edited out.

Sacrificial Magic Downside Ghosts Book 4 edition by Stacia Kane Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

In book four of the Downside Ghosts series, Chess takes on more difficult assignments from The Church and faces more difficult personal decisions regarding her relationship with Terrible and her relationship with Lex. Chess struggles continually with despair and self-loathing knowing she is unworthy of love or respect. Chess continues to use drugs to cover any and all emotional pain that resides in her consciousness moment by moment. I continue to despair that Chess will ever consider slowing down on the drug use and begin to face her demons. However, Stacia Kane provides hope as Chess appears to gain some insights about herself and has the courage not to shut them down. All of this is happening while Chess fights ugly magic and murderous ghosts and rival crime bosses. It is an amazing world Stacia Kane has created. One that draws me in, kicking and complaining, because I do not want to see Chess' struggle, but I keep coming back to root for her.

Five stars for unique world building, creative language building and characters full of trauma and pain and yet surviving to live lives that have meaning.
It is refreshing to have a main character with significant flaws and Chess has them which makes her interesting. Urban fantasy tends to trend towards righteous goody-goody main characters who can do no wrong except maybe when it comes to their romantic sub plot, but the Downside Ghosts books gives the reader a gritty brutal environment with a self destructive main character and, for me, this is what I find refreshing because the real world is not all roses. Sacrificial Magic continues this trend with new mysteries and more character chaos.

My hope is Stacia Kane can evolve Chess in future books more than she has done so already. Each book Chess' habits get a little worse and while other aspects of her life might marginally improve she is on a dangerous path. I feel like the series could really go somewhere special as it progresses and ends. This book and the previous one are similar with different investigative plots but similar relationship and environment plots. My hope is Stacia Kane can take her expertly crafted characters and go somewhere unique with the series as it ends. I'm not expecting a happy ending especially since the habits Chess has are often deadly and her job equally so, but whether it is enlightenment or tragedy (or both) I think this series could be something special if done right and avoid the typical series cash-in that results in diluted characters, plots lacking creativity, and overly rehashed themes.
Ah, the long awaited book to arrive. Was a chore to get this one. I ordered it the first time and after waiting almost two weeks, was sent the wrong book! The second time, I ordered it with a pre-order and noted to ship separately but they did not, so I had to wait for the fifth book to be released and then for it to all finally arrive. When finally here I gobbled it in record speed.

Again Chess is an emotional mess dealing with her past, which we get more glimpses of, and continued drug excessiveness as she deals with anxiety and pain over her new-found relationship. There is more emotional angst and relationship stuff in this one by far. The story itself is one of the more intriguing of the series, with the unusual setting of a school as a background. The beginning started out clever with the mystery of the missing debunker and set-up of the unusual players. Pacing never let up in the relationship department but the author did let the story take a small backseat sometimes. The ending battle was awesome. Also, there was plenty of sweetness with Elder Griffin.

In almost every story, book, movie, play, production, you name it, for the story to continue the character has to start changing and evolving. Most of the time the change is for the better, occasionally for the worst. Chess is finally starting to grow a bit. She's as addicted as ever to the drugs and there's still no end in sight, even in her thoughts she's not considering quitting. I'm pleased to see her confidence is boosting ever so slightly every once in awhile - she's still a low self esteem mess waiting for the other shoe to drop and "her" to ruin her relationships with the few she cares about, waiting for them to see the real her and how horrible she is and turn away like everyone has done before her.

Out of all the books, this is probably the most introspective and angst-filled of the series. Not quite as good as book three, but still a more than rewarding read, this series continues it's dark, unsettling journey into a mysterious end-road that I can't even begin to guess at yet.

I really liked the school setting in this one for the mystery! The accidents, the location, the interactions between the characters and the surprise of who one of them turns out being, all helped to keep the action in this one going. Good stuff and setting.

The ending note clearly sets up for some upcoming wars between Lex and the rest, sprucing up the unusual triangle Chess, Lex, and Terrible have going down. I did knock this down as a star as I thought the angst was a little heavy and sacrificed the story slightly, but overall another great addition to the series, making it unusual, gritty, and addictive.
